I know that it can be hard to work out transportation in a new city! Especially in San Jose where traffic can be tough.
Cisco offers all badged employees in San Jose, unlimited rides on the lightrail (VTA) through the use of an EcoPass. This is the public transportation option in the San Jose metro area. On your first day of work, you may visit building 9 to obtain your Cisco badge. While you are there, try to also pick up your free EcoPass.
When looking for places to live, it might be a good idea to ask if they are located on the lightrail (VTA). There is literally a VTA stop in the center of Cisco's campus. It's awesome!

Do you have an idea as to how the Enclave Apartments are (5 min walk from Cisco)in terms of housing, safety, deposits etc. as they look wonderful on the site but we have found some really discouraging reviews about them. I am putting up the links as well for you to see:

Looks like those apts are 2.23 miles away from the center of Cisco. I lived about a mile from there and felt safe enough to fun alone after dark! There is a country club right there as well... I would say that anything within a 3 sq mile block of Cisco is safe!

I am confused whether to look for apartment near CISCO or near San Jose downtown. Thought of staying near to downtown came to mind so as to be able to enjoy after evening. How is the night life and stuff in the area near Cisco. What would you suggest, Staying near Cisco or near downtown? I have also heard that apartments near Cisco are more expensive than those near downtown. Is that true? Could you suggest some apartment complexes along with their rent range near Cisco and also which streets to look for apartments on?

The Great Mall Transit Station does have a light rail stop.
You can find a full map of VTA light rail and bus routes at http://www.vta.org/schedules/schedules_bymap.html
It's pretty useful for figuring out how to get to Cisco from anywhere in the South Bay Area.

to look at the surrounding area of where you are commuting...
a lot of the places in san jose are annotated so you can see whats around the area and whether you will be moving into residential, city, or industrial areas.
oh yes, make sure to change the view to "hybrid" on the top left, it gives you an overlay of street names and satellite maps.

The commute from SJ downtown isn't bad if you are taking the public transportation. It has a pretty cool nightlife, though I prefer to go out in Campbell, Willow Glen or Palo Alto, all of which are about 15-20 mins w/o traffice from Cisco.
I know right around Cisco is pretty expensive, but if you can move a little further toward dwntwn you will save money. Sunnyvale or Menlo Park (if you have a car) is a cheaper alternative as well...

You should work with your recruiter to find out when you will be contacted with your manager's name. I was just in Dallas with the person who heads this up and she is now in SJ placing all of you...
Also, while Cisco is a huge campus, it won't really matter what building you are in comparison to where you live. Cisco has shuttles that take you all over the campus...

I am planning to live somewhat far from the Cisco campus and I have a question regarding carpools. I did hear about the shuttle service within the Cisco campus but I was wondering if there were any resources where I could find out about carpools for Cisco interns/employees since that seems more convenient. If there's a website that has this kind of information, that would be very helpful. Also, if this is something you wouldn't recommend, please let me know.
